Communities Lead. We Partner. Together we build.
Learn more about how Building Humanity selects projects, works with communities, funds construction, and engages volunteers around the world.
No. Previous construction experience is not required. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and skill levels. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to teamwork are the most important qualities for a successful build experience. Volunteer teams typically range from 10 to 20 participants.
A $250 deposit is required to reserve your spot on a build team. Volunteers are encouraged to fundraise the remaining trip costs, and we provide fundraising resources and guidance based on strategies that have helped past volunteers successfully meet their goals.
We regularly seek volunteers with backgrounds in architecture, engineering, construction, education, STEAM programming, healthcare, communications, photography, videography, fundraising, and nonprofit administration. However, many projects require general volunteer support, so anyone can provide meaningful work.
Communities typically approach us directly, or through trusted local partners. We work collaboratively to assess needs, define project goals, and ensure community members lead decisions about priorities and implementation.
It depends on the project. Some community partners already have designs, or rough plans in place before reaching out to us. When design support is needed, our network of volunteer professionals, including architects, engineers, planners, landscape designers, and other specialists, assists in whatever capacity the community requires. Whether providing full design services, technical guidance, fundraising support, or project review, we work alongside communities to help bring their vision to life.
Yes. Every project begins with a request from a community, organization, or local partner. Contact us to discuss your needs, the impact of the proposed project, and how it aligns with our mission and six pillars of development.
Volunteer age requirements vary by project. Some builds welcome families and younger participants accompanied by a parent or guardian, while others may have minimum age restrictions based on safety and project requirements.
Accommodations vary by location and project. Participants receive detailed information about lodging, meals, transportation, and packing requirements before departure.
We strongly recommend travel insurance for all international volunteer trips to help protect against unexpected travel disruptions, medical expenses, and emergencies.
The safety of volunteers and community members is our highest priority. We work with trusted local partners, conduct project assessments, provide orientation before departure, and establish communication procedures throughout each trip.
Donations support project materials, community programs, professional design services, volunteer coordination, and operational expenses necessary to deliver sustainable impact. Building Humanity is committed to maximizing the value of every contribution.
Yes. We offer project-specific giving opportunities for many of our initiatives. Most projects have their own dedicated fundraising page, allowing donors to support a specific community, program, or build effort. When making a donation, you can typically select where you would like your contribution directed. If you have questions about current projects or designated giving options, please contact us for additional information.
Yes. We welcome donations of professional services, construction materials, equipment, software, travel support, and other resources that advance our mission.

In early summer 2027 we return to Watamu for year two of our partnership with RegisTree, supporting sanitation improvements at public sites throughout the community. Dates are not yet set. No construction experience is required, just a willingness to learn, contribute, and work alongside the community.
Every project begins with people who choose to make a difference. Whether you volunteer your time, share your professional expertise, or support our work through a donation, your contribution helps communities create lasting change.
Volunteer. Donate. Partner. Build a better future with us.
